Webinar of the department graduate for students
In the context of teaching the discipline “Nonlinear and discrete automatic control systems”, a webinar by the department’s graduate Sergiy Sydorenko was held on 10.05.22 for students of groups EP-01, EP-02 and EP-p01. Sergii Sydorenko received his master’s degree at the Department of Automation of Electromechanical Systems and Electric Drive in 2014. He currently works as a Project Supervisor at the Belgian company Petersime..
During the webinar, Sergiy provided information about Petersime, which is a global leader in the production of incubation machines. Video materials were shown that demonstrated the structure and principle of operation of hatching machines. The peculiarities of automation of the technological process of chick incubation, which lasts 21 days, were also covered in detail. The successful implementation of the technological process is ensured by three automatic control systems that maintain the temperature, pressure and humidity in the working area of the incubation machines at an optimal level. The closed-loop control circuits contain significantly nonlinear and discrete elements, such as relays, two-way and three-way valves, analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters, etc. Control algorithms are implemented in a digital controller. Sergiy noted that the design and configuration of such systems is largely based on the material of the disciplines “Theory of Automatic Control” and “Nonlinear and Discrete Automatic Control Systems.”
As a project manager, Sergiy’s area of responsibility includes support of installation works during the construction of a plant that can contain up to three dozen hatching machines, as well as commissioning and start-up of hatching machines. The company’s products are in demand in different countries and continents. Sergiy has implemented projects in such countries as England, Italy, China, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, and others.
The students asked a number of questions, including the difficulty of finding a job in a foreign company, the relevance of the knowledge gained at the department to real work tasks, professional competition in the company, financial support, etc.
After answering the questions of the webinar participants, Sergii noted that the Electromechanical Automation Systems, Electric Drive and Electromobility study program is currently promising in the labor market. Therefore, graduates of our department have good chances to get a job in their specialty in both domestic and foreign companies.
At the end of the webinar, the lecturer and students expressed their gratitude to the department’s graduate, Serhii Sydorenko, for the interesting and useful meeting.
A graduate of the department held a seminar for students
On 18.04.2022, a regular seminar was held for students of groups EP-p11, EP-01 and EP-02 as part of the teaching of the educational component “Automation Systems”. This time the seminar was conducted by a graduate of the Department of Automation of Electromechanical Systems and Electric Drive Yevhen Terletskyi. Eugene is now an employee of TESLA.
The seminar consisted of two parts.
In the first part, Yevhen told the applicants about his studies at a Canadian college after receiving his bachelor’s degree. In his story, he primarily emphasized the peculiarities of college education. He noted that these features relate to the practical training of applicants and their laboratory work. The report was accompanied by a demonstration of the work of stands with industrial manipulators from ABB.
After that, Yevhen told the students about his experience at Abraham Innovation. The speaker showed the designed control cabinets and talked about his growing experience in programming various types of robotic manipulators. During his talk, Yevhen showed various photos of his projects.
This part of the seminar ended with Yevhen Terletskyi’s comprehensive answers to the questions of the seminar participants.
In the second part of the seminar for students, Yevhen spoke about his experience in developing and programming process control systems with HMI and SCADA interfaces. This report was supported by a demonstration of software used abroad.
At the end of his presentation, Yevhen answered questions from the applicants.
In the end, the speaker noted the prospects of the specialty and the educational program “Electromechanical Automation Systems, Electric Drive and Electromobility” and wished the students to improve their knowledge in the field of automation.
You can watch the recording of the seminar at https://youtu.be/fsMl9OVp208.
Graduates of the department improve the educational program
Graduates of the Department of Automation of Electromechanical Systems and Electric Drive continue to contribute to the improvement of the bachelor’s degree program. Thus, on April 17, 2022, the guarantor of the educational program “Electromechanical Automation Systems, Electric Drive and Electromobility” Serhii Burian held an online meeting with a graduate of the department Yevhenii Terletskyi. Yevhenii currently lives in Canada and works for Tesla.
During the meeting, Yevhen spoke about his studies and work abroad. The graduate spoke about the current requirements for the training of applicants in the field of Automation. This area is an integral part of the bachelor’s degree program at our department. The current areas of work for graduates who want to work in automation in the future were discussed. During the meeting, the parties raised questions about modern software that is widely used in industrial enterprises abroad.
Yevhen also expressed his support for the educational program and provided some recommendations for its improvement. In particular, he advised to focus on learning the ST programming language for PLC and SCADA systems. In addition, our graduate emphasized the desirability of introducing object-oriented programming. In his opinion, time should be allocated to studying databases in the senior year. All this knowledge is very relevant at the current stage of development of electromechanical automated systems.
According to Yevhen, by acquiring this knowledge, graduates of the Department of Automation of Electromechanical Systems and Electric Drive will significantly increase their chances of getting interesting job offers, including abroad.
The department thanks Yevhen for supporting the educational program and looks forward to further interesting cooperation!
Lectures for second-year students of the Department of Automation of Electromechanical Systems and Electric Drive from Siemens
Equipment from our stakeholders!
The Department of Automation of Electromechanical Systems and Electric Drives, in cooperation with Siemens, has received two Siemens Logo logic controllers to create a new laboratory work on the educational component of the Automation System. Starting from the next semester, the students of the department will be able to acquire the ability to configure and program PLCs of this type. Many thanks to the graduate of our department, Siemens employee, Viktor Reshetnyk, for supporting the educational process and participating in the updating of the laboratory base!
From the industry to the department!
Today, the Department of Automation of Electromechanical Systems and Electric Drives received a Moeller Easy719 programmable logic controller (PLC) and an I/O expansion unit from our graduate Oleksii Semenov. This controller has been discontinued due to the replacement of the automation system, but the approaches to its configuration and programming are no different from newer versions.
This PLC will be used in the discipline “Automation Systems” to develop students’ skills in configuring and programming lower-level automation systems.
New DE10 Lite FPGAs from Altera
Associate Professor of the Department of Automation of Electromechanical Systems and Electric Drive Serhii Burian received seven DE10 Lite development boards from the Taiwanese company ALTERA, which develops and implements programmable logic integrated circuits. This became possible thanks to his participation in the university support program Intel FPGA University Program.
The DE10 Lite Board is a development board based on the Altera MAX 10 FPGA programmable logic integrated circuit. The board utilizes the entire available memory of the MAX 10 FPGA, which is 50K logic elements (LE). The DE10-Lite Board integrates USB-Blaster, SD-RAM, accelerometer, VGA output, 2×20 GPIO expansion connector and an Arduino UNO R3-compatible compact expansion connector. The kit is an ideal system solution for prototyping industrial, automotive, consumer, and many other software applications. This development board can be used to teach students to create their own projects: from simple programs to complex multimedia projects.
These boards will be used in new laboratory works in the discipline “Automation Systems”, in the section “Design of automation systems based on programmable logic integrated circuits”. Third-year students Oleksii Dudnyk (EP-61), Petro Mordas (EP-62), Oleksandr Voshkulat (EP-p61) and Vadym Khudobets (EP-p61) are currently developing new tasks for students and methodological instructions under the guidance of Serhii Oleksandrovych.
